Westfair Baptist Church has found an innovative way to blend playfulness with profound lessons at its annual Vacation Bible School, using Legos to instill foundational principles of faith and life. Participants at this year’s event are engaged in constructing symbolic structures such as crosses, cranes, and castles out of the colorful blocks.
The overarching theme, “Build Your Life on Jesus,” underscores the importance of establishing a sturdy spiritual foundation from a young age, as explained by associate pastor Josh Rhea. “To live a fulfilling life, one must first lay a solid groundwork,” Rhea emphasized. Activities throughout the week, including music, skits, and crafting, are designed to reinforce this central message.
Beyond mere play, the school imparts values like choosing wisely, strengthening faith, and personal growth. Each project, from assembling elaborate castles to crafting gifts for Operation Christmas Child boxes, serves a dual purpose of education and enjoyment, Rhea noted.
Seven-year-old Paisley Everett expressed her enthusiasm for the Lego-themed activities, highlighting the freedom they offer: “I love Legos because you can build whatever you want.”
Twelve-year-old Allen Eckert echoed her sentiment, sharing his delight in the Lego-centered curriculum: “I’m thrilled they made a cross out of Legos. I enjoy everything about Vacation Bible School—it’s all really fun.”
While children delve into the theme, they are also encouraged to give back through donations and crafting items for charity. Throughout the week, monetary contributions will support the Ziss family’s efforts to expand a church in the Philippines, underscoring the school’s commitment to global outreach.
Moreover, attendees are crafting between 100 and 125 Christmas gift boxes, filled with handmade treasures like dolls, tic-tac-toe bags, and teddy bears. These items, destined for children in need, evoke a sense of empathy and generosity among the young participants.
“I’m excited to make the tic-tac-toe bag, especially knowing it will go to kids who need toys,” said Paisley, reflecting on her charitable contribution.
On the program’s final day, parents will join their children to assemble additional gifts for the Christmas boxes, fostering a communal spirit of giving. Allen, who has previously participated in Operation Christmas Child, eagerly anticipates this culmination: “It’s fulfilling to bring joy to kids who might not receive many Christmas presents.”
Westfair Baptist Church’s Vacation Bible School not only educates children in foundational faith principles but also instills a spirit of compassion and generosity—a testament to the community’s commitment to nurturing young hearts and minds.
