This feast is one of the most joyful celebrations in the Jewish calendar. It reminds the Israelites how God took care of them in the wilderness after they left Egypt. During this feast, sacrifices were made every day. The type and number of offerings changed from day to day.

In Numbers 29:37, we are reading instructions for the seventh day of the feast. The people of Israel were to bring specific offerings to God. These included animals like bullocks (bulls), rams, and lambs. Along with the animals, they had to bring meat offerings and drink offerings. This verse tells them that these offerings must be “according to their number, after the manner.”

Let us now read the verse carefully.

Numbers 29:37 (KJV)

“Their meat offering and their drink offerings for the bullock, for the ram, and for the lambs, shall be according to their number, after the manner:”— Numbers 29:37 (King James Version)

This short verse carries a lot of meaning about obedience, order, and worship.

Numbers 29:37 Meaning

Let’s break this verse down into smaller parts to understand its full meaning.

“Their meat offering and their drink offerings…”

The meat offering, also known as the grain offering, was not meat like we think of today. It was made from flour, oil, and sometimes frankincense. It symbolized the fruit of the earth and the labor of man. The drink offering was wine poured out to the Lord. Both offerings were given along with the animals.

These offerings showed thankfulness and devotion. They were not for sin but were a way to show love and honor to God. The Israelites were not to bring only animals but also these extra gifts.

“…for the bullock, for the ram, and for the lambs…”

Each type of animal had its own special meaning. A bullock or bull was a large and expensive offering. It was often given to show dedication and strength. A ram was a male sheep and symbolized power and sacrifice. A lamb, especially one without blemish, pointed to purity and innocence. All these animals were used in different parts of the feast and represented different truths about God and man.

“…shall be according to their number…”

This part tells us that the offerings had to match the number of animals. If there were eight bulls, then there had to be eight sets of meat and drink offerings for them. If there were two rams, then two sets of offerings were required for the rams. It had to be exact. God is a God of detail. Everything had to be done properly and in the right amount.

“…after the manner:”

This phrase means “as prescribed” or “as God had commanded.” The offerings were not to be done in a random way. God had already given instructions in earlier chapters on how each offering should be made. The people were to follow these instructions closely.

Numbers 29:37 Application in Life

Though we no longer offer bulls, rams, and lambs today, this verse still teaches us important life lessons.

1. God Desires Order in Worship

God gave very specific instructions to the Israelites. He didn’t leave them to guess. In our modern worship, we should also seek to do things in a respectful and orderly way. This doesn’t mean we can’t be joyful and expressive. It means we must still honor God with reverence and truth.

2. Obedience Matters

The Israelites were to offer everything “according to their number” and “after the manner.” God wants His people to obey Him fully, not just partly. Partial obedience is not true obedience. In our lives, we must pay attention to how we live, speak, and treat others. We should seek to obey God’s Word in all areas of life.

3. Give God Your Best

These offerings were costly. Bulls and rams were not cheap. The Israelites were giving from their wealth. Today, God still wants us to give our best. This could be our time, talents, and treasures. He wants our first and not our leftovers.

4. Everything Should Be Done for God’s Glory

Even though the offerings were physical items, they pointed to something bigger—worship and love for God. Our actions, no matter how small, should bring glory to God. Whether we are helping someone, singing a song, or working hard, it should be done in a way that honors God.

5. Jesus Is the Fulfillment of All Sacrifices

All these offerings in Numbers pointed to Jesus Christ. He is the Lamb without blemish. He is the perfect sacrifice. We no longer need to bring bulls and rams because Jesus gave His life for us once and for all. Numbers 29:37 reminds us of the cost of sin and the beauty of God’s grace through Jesus.

6. Regular Worship is Important

The Feast of Tabernacles lasted seven days. Each day had its own sacrifices and offerings. This shows that worship is not a one-time thing. It is ongoing. We should not just seek God once a week but every day. Our hearts must always be open to Him.

Conclusion

Numbers 29:37 may seem like a small verse with ancient instructions, but it holds deep truths. It shows us that God values worship that is sincere, orderly, and from the heart. It teaches us about obedience and giving. Most importantly, it reminds us of Jesus, the perfect sacrifice for our sins.

When we read such verses, we should not skip over them. Even in the smallest details, God is speaking. He is showing His holiness, His love, and His desire for a relationship with His people.

As Christians today, let us strive to worship God with our whole hearts. Let us obey His Word, follow His ways, and offer our lives as a living sacrifice to Him.

May we never forget that everything we have—our time, our talents, and our treasures—comes from God and should be given back to Him with joy.
