The Israelites had wandered in the wilderness for 40 years because of their disobedience and lack of faith when they first reached the Promised Land (Numbers 14). As a result, God decreed that the entire generation of men who had doubted Him would die in the wilderness, except for Joshua and Caleb (Numbers 14:29-30).
Now, a new generation of Israelites was ready to enter the Promised Land. Before allowing them to take possession of the land, God instructed Moses and Eleazar (the priest) to conduct a census. This census was important for:

Hepher was the ancestor of the Hepherites, a family within the tribe of Manasseh. His name is recorded in the Bible because his descendants played a role in Israel’s history.

Although Hepher himself is not mentioned much elsewhere, his descendants became significant in biblical history. One of the most notable stories related to Hepher’s family is found in Joshua 17:3-6.
Hepher’s descendant, Zelophehad, had five daughters but no sons.
In those days, women did not usually inherit land.
However, the daughters of Zelophehad boldly asked Moses for their father’s inheritance.
God commanded that they should receive a share of the land, establishing an important law of inheritance for future generations.

Isaiah 43:1 says, “Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.”
