The Book of Numbers is the fourth book of the Bible. It is part of the Pentateuch, which was written by Moses. The book mainly records the journey of the Israelites through the wilderness after they left Egypt.
Numbers 26 is an important chapter because it contains the second census of the Israelites. The first census was recorded in Numbers 1, which counted the Israelites before they set out from Mount Sinai. The second census, found in Numbers 26, was taken near the end of their journey, just before they entered the Promised Land.
The main purposes of this census were:
To count the men of Israel who could fight in battle.
To divide the land among the tribes based on their population size.
To document the next generation, since the older generation had perished in the wilderness due to their disobedience (Numbers 14:29-35).
Numbers 26:12 specifically mentions the descendants of Simeon, one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

Numbers 26:12 Meaning
This verse is simple, but it carries important lessons. Let’s break it down into three parts:
1. The Sons of Simeon
The verse begins by stating, “The sons of Simeon after their families.” This means the descendants of Simeon were counted by their family groups. Family and lineage were very important in Israel, as they determined inheritance, leadership, and identity.
Simeon was the second son of Jacob and Leah (Genesis 29:33). His descendants became one of the twelve tribes of Israel. However, the tribe of Simeon faced many challenges.
2. The Families of Simeon
The verse lists three major families that came from Simeon’s sons:
The Nemuelites – Descendants of Nemuel (also called Jemuel in Genesis 46:10).
The Jaminites – Descendants of Jamin.
The Jachinites – Descendants of Jachin.
These families were counted among the men of Israel who would inherit the land. However, it is important to note that the tribe of Simeon had decreased in number significantly.
3. The Decline of Simeon’s Tribe
In Numbers 1:23, during the first census, the tribe of Simeon had 59,300 men. However, in Numbers 26:14, we see that their number had dropped to 22,200 men. This was a huge decrease—more than 60% of their population was lost.
One possible reason for this decline is their involvement in idolatry and immorality. In Numbers 25, the Israelites, including many from the tribe of Simeon, participated in worshiping Baal and engaging in sinful behavior with Moabite women. As a result, God sent a plague, which killed 24,000 people (Numbers 25:9).
This teaches us that sin has consequences, and disobedience can lead to destruction.
Numbers 26:12 Application in Life
1. God Keeps Records of His People
Numbers 26:12 reminds us that God cares about individuals and families. He counted the Israelites, showing that each person mattered. Today, God still keeps track of His people.
In Luke 12:7, Jesus said, “But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.” This means God knows everything about us—our struggles, our victories, and our needs.
No one is forgotten by God. He sees you and cares for you, just as He cared for the Israelites.
2. The Consequences of Sin
The tribe of Simeon lost many of its people because they disobeyed God. This shows that when we turn away from God, we face consequences.
Galatians 6:7 warns us: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.”
If we choose to follow God’s ways, we will receive His blessings. But if we choose sin, we will face loss and destruction.
3. God’s Mercy and Second Chances
Even though the tribe of Simeon became smaller, God did not destroy them completely. They were still given a place in Israel. This shows that God is merciful.
No matter what mistakes we have made, we can always come back to God. He is ready to forgive and restore us.
1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
4. Obedience to God Brings Blessings
The other tribes of Israel also had their numbers counted, and some grew in population. This shows that those who remained faithful to God were blessed.
Psalm 1:1-3 tells us that those who follow God’s commands will be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, bearing fruit in its season.
If we want to experience God’s blessings, we must be faithful and obedient.
5. God Has a Plan for Every Family
Numbers 26:12 lists the families of Simeon, reminding us that God values family. Today, families are under attack by worldly influences. However, God wants families to be strong, faithful, and devoted to Him.
Parents should teach their children to follow God’s ways, just as Moses instructed the Israelites. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says:
“And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”
A family that follows God will experience His guidance and protection.
