In a notable departure from tradition, President Donald Trump did not place his hand on a Bible during his inauguration on January 20, 2017. Instead of following the customary gesture of placing his hand on a Bible while taking the oath of office, Trump stood with his left arm down by his side and raised his right hand.
For the swearing-in ceremony, Trump used two Bibles. One was a family Bible, and the other was the renowned Lincoln Bible, which had previously been used by Abraham Lincoln during his 1861 inauguration and by Barack Obama during his 2009 and 2013 inaugurations. Despite the absence of the traditional hand-on-Bible gesture, the moment was still a historic occasion as Trump took the oath to become the 45th President of the United States.
