The Order of the Camps
1. The LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:
2. “The Israelites shall camp under their respective banners beside the flags of their families; they are to camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance.
3. On the east side, toward the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to camp under their banner:
Nahshon son of Amminadab will lead them,
4. with his troop as numbered: 74,600.
5. Those who camp next to Judah will be the tribe of Issachar:
Nethanel son of Zuar will lead them,
6. with his troop as numbered: 54,400.
7. The tribe of Zebulun will be next.
Eliab son of Helon will lead them,
8. with his troop as numbered: 57,400.
9. The total number in the camp of Judah, listed by their divisions, is 186,400. They are to set out first.
10. On the south side will be the divisions of the camp of Reuben, under their banner.
Elizur son of Shedeur will lead them,
11. with his troop as numbered: 46,500.
12. Those who camp next to Reuben will be the tribe of Simeon.
Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai will lead them,
13. with his troop as numbered: 59,300.
14. The tribe of Gad will be next.
Eliasaph son of Deuel will lead them,
15. with his troop as numbered: 45,650.
16. The total number in the camp of Reuben, listed by their divisions, is 151,450. They are to set out second.
17. Then the Tent of Meeting, with the camp of the Levites, will set out in the middle of the camps. They are to set out in the same order as they camp, each in his own place, under his own standard.
18. On the west side will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim, under their banner.
Elishama son of Ammihud will lead them,
19. with his troop as numbered: 40,500.
20. Those who camp next to Ephraim will be the tribe of Manasseh.
Gamaliel son of Pedahzur will lead them,
21. with his troop as numbered: 32,200.
22. The tribe of Benjamin will be next.
Abidan son of Gideoni will lead them,
23. with his troop as numbered: 35,400.
24. The total number in the camp of Ephraim, listed by their divisions, is 108,100. They are to set out third.
25. On the north side will be the divisions of the camp of Dan, under their banner.
Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai will lead them,
26. with his troop as numbered: 62,700.
27. Those who camp next to Dan will be the tribe of Asher.
Pagiel son of Ochran will lead them,
28. with his troop as numbered: 41,500.
29. The tribe of Naphtali will be next.
Ahira son of Enan will lead them,
30. with his troop as numbered: 53,400.
31. The total number in the camp of Dan is 157,600. They are to set out last, with their standards.
32. These are the Israelites, counted according to their fathers’ houses. The total number in the camps, by their divisions, is 603,550.
33. But the Levites were not counted among them by their fathers’ tribe.
34. So the Israelites did everything just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
