Fr Francis D’Britto, Renowned Author of Marathi Bible Translation, Passes Away

Vasai, Palghar District – Fr Francis D’Britto, a distinguished priest and author celebrated for his transformative work translating the Bible into Marathi, peacefully passed away on Thursday following an extended illness, according to sources close to his family.

Fr D’Britto, aged 81, breathed his last at his residence in Vasai, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in Marathi literary and religious circles. Born to Marathi-speaking parents, his magnum opus, the ‘Subodh Bible’, remains a seminal contribution to Marathi literature, revered for its accessibility and depth.

“I am happy that I could make some contribution to Marathi literature by getting the Holy Bible to the Marathi reader,” Fr D’Britto had expressed, reflecting on the widespread acclaim garnered by his translation effort.

The ‘Subodh Bible’ spans an expansive 80-page introduction to familiarize readers with its contents. It includes comprehensive coverage of new theological movements within the church, complemented by nearly 200 illustrations depicting Biblical scenes and maps. A detailed commentary further elucidates intricate biblical concepts, making the scriptures more accessible to a wider audience.

Fr D’Britto’s journey with the ‘Subodh Bible’ spanned over 15 years, during which his commitment to literature and community was evident. A former editor of the community journal ‘Suvarta’ in Vasai, he was renowned for his advocacy in various public initiatives, notably the ‘Harit Vasai’ movement promoting environmental sustainability and green practices.

Beyond his literary achievements, Fr D’Britto was honored with the prestigious Dnyanoba-Tukaram Puraskar for his significant literary contributions, a historic recognition as the first Catholic priest to receive the award established in 2007. His translation prowess was further lauded with the Maharashtra Government’s literary award for best translation in 2013, followed by the Sahitya Akademi award in April 2014.

Fr D’Britto’s influence extended into the heart of the Marathi literary community, culminating in his election as president of the 93rd Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan held at Dharadhiv in 2020, underscoring his profound impact on Marathi literature and culture.
