In the wake of an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a campaign rally on Saturday, religious leaders from various faiths have come together to urge prayers for his recovery. The incident, where Trump was shot in the right ear by an assailant on a nearby rooftop, resulted in his hospitalization and left one dead and two critically injured among the spectators.
Israeli ultra-Orthodox Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri invoked Psalms 130, calling on the public to join in collective prayer. Rabbi Batzri, a prominent Sephardic leader and son of esteemed kabbalist Rabbi David Batzri, is renowned for his community work and religious teachings.
“Please pray for the recovery of Donald Trump, a beloved figure in Israel and the US presidential candidate, son of Mary Anne MacLeod. May he swiftly heal. An assassin attempted his life about an hour ago, resulting in his hospitalization,” he expressed.
American Rabbi Shmuley Boteach stressed the importance of communal support, stating, “Let us pray for Trump’s recovery and for peace in our nation.” Boteach, a respected Orthodox rabbi, author, and public speaker, is known for his advocacy of Trump.
Rabbi David Wolpe, a senior figure in the Conservative Movement, highlighted the gravity of the situation in American political life: “This is a troubling moment. We are grateful the assassination attempt failed and pray for Trump’s recovery and the return to peaceful elections. Our condolences go to the victims’ families.”
Evangelical leaders also called for prayers:
Pastor John Hagee of Hagee Ministries urged on Facebook, “As we pray for Donald Trump, let us also pray for America and the healing of our nation.” Pastor Hagee, known for his support of Israel and evangelical outreach, is the founder of Hagee Ministries and a senior pastor at Cornerstone Church in Dallas, Texas.
Rev. Jonnie Moore echoed similar sentiments, saying, “May God protect America and all our leaders. We thank God that President Trump survived this evil act.” Moore, an author and human rights advocate, is recognized for his interfaith efforts and support for religious freedoms.
The FBI has assumed control of the investigation, with commendations for the Secret Service’s swift response in apprehending the shooter.
