In a bold move to address what he describes as an “antiquated and broken” US immigration system, US Representative Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) unveiled a multifaceted strategy aimed at bipartisan reform. Dubbed “Business, the Bible, and Badges,” Suozzi’s initiative seeks to galvanize support across sectors traditionally at odds on immigration policy.
“Business has a huge stake in immigration reform,” Suozzi emphasized, highlighting the critical role of immigrant workers across industries such as technology, agriculture, and healthcare. He stressed the necessity for a coherent immigration policy to sustain economic growth and stability.
The inclusion of “bible” in Suozzi’s coalition signifies a call to shared American values of equality, human dignity, and respect. He underscored the importance of religious and secular leaders in upholding these principles, advocating for policies that reflect compassion and fairness.
Regarding “badges,” Suozzi pointed to the essential role of law enforcement in securing borders and communities. He emphasized the need for modernized tools and technology to enhance border security while ensuring humane treatment of migrants.
Suozzi criticized the divisive nature of current immigration discourse, attributing the crisis to political maneuvering rather than meaningful reform. “Too many politicians have weaponized immigration policy without fixing it,” he remarked, pledging to introduce bipartisan legislation aimed at securing borders, revamping asylum procedures, and prioritizing humane treatment of immigrants.
Having visited the southern border extensively and consulted with a wide array of stakeholders including border patrol agents, local officials, and community leaders, Suozzi emphasized the urgency of reform. “It’s clear that the current approach is failing,” he concluded.
Suozzi, who represents New York’s 3rd District and is set to expand his constituency in January, assumes a pivotal role as co-chair of the newly established Democrats for Border Security Task Force. His initiative marks a concerted effort to bridge partisan divides and effect meaningful change in US immigration policy.
