WREG has uncovered more details about the tragic altercation that led to the death of Pastor Ricky Floyd outside Momma’s Bar and Kitchen on March 12, as Samantha Marion’s attorneys reveal their version of events.
In an exclusive interview with WREG, Marion’s attorneys presented a video they claim shows Marion was in fear when she shot and killed Floyd. The video, however, does not capture the entire incident, leaving many unanswered questions about what happened before and after the footage ends. Marion’s attorney, John Keith Perry, explained that Marion had just met Steven Newsom, a man identified by police as being at the bar with her at the time of the altercation.
Perry revealed that Marion had never met Pastor Floyd before that night. The video shows a tense moment before the shooting, with Marion and Floyd engaging in a heated discussion about religion. Perry described the scene, stating that Floyd was distributing religious publications to bar patrons when an argument ensued. The conflict reportedly escalated when Marion challenged Floyd’s presence in the bar at 1 a.m., asking how he could preach while being at a bar so late.
Marion, according to her lawyer, got the better of Floyd in the argument, which eventually led Floyd to storm out of the bar with his publications. Perry noted that while the exact words exchanged are unclear, there was no direct threat made during the confrontation. Newsom attempted to intervene by standing between the two, at one point knocking Floyd to the ground.
As Floyd tried to leave, Marion attempted to capture a picture of his license plate, and this moment was recorded on Marion’s phone. In the video, Marion can be heard repeatedly instructing Floyd to back up as he approached her in the parking lot.
Newsom, who spoke to acquaintances after the incident, described the situation as escalating quickly and left him feeling nervous. Marion’s defense attorneys argued that she was well within her rights to stand in the parking lot and record Floyd’s license plate, especially after Floyd allegedly assaulted her and Newsom. They further contended that Marion was justified in defending herself, as she feared for her life.
The family of Pastor Floyd has expressed that the video does not show everything that transpired that night and is awaiting the justice process to unfold. The family is hopeful that the truth will come to light in the courts.
Pastor Ricky Floyd’s funeral is scheduled to take place on Friday at Greater Imani Church in Raleigh, marking a somber moment for the community as they mourn the loss of the beloved pastor.
