What Does Exodus Chapter 36 Teach Us?

Exodus 36 continues the narrative from the previous chapter, where the Israelites begin to respond to God’s call to build the Tabernacle, the holy dwelling place of God among His people. In this chapter, we see the practical implementation of the plans for the Tabernacle and the people’s overwhelming generosity and obedience. Here are some key lessons from Exodus 36:

1. The Blessing of Generosity and Willingness

In Exodus 36:3-7, we see the Israelites’ overwhelming generosity in response to Moses’ call for materials to build the Tabernacle. The people bring more than enough for the work to be done. This teaches us the power of a willing heart. When God calls us to give—whether through our time, talents, or resources—He delights in our willing and generous spirit. The Israelites’ response shows that true generosity is not about the amount given, but the heart from which it flows.

2. God Honors Skillful and Diligent Work

Exodus 36:8-19 describes the skilled craftsmen, Bezalel and Oholiab, leading the construction of the Tabernacle. God had filled them with wisdom, understanding, and knowledge to carry out the intricate work. This teaches us that God values and equips those with special skills to contribute to His purposes. Whether in the arts, administration, leadership, or any other field, God calls us to offer our abilities diligently and for His glory. Skill and craftsmanship, when used for God’s work, become an act of worship.

3. Excellence in God’s Work

The detailed descriptions of the Tabernacle’s construction in this chapter—its curtains, coverings, frames, and other elements—highlight the importance of excellence in carrying out God’s commands. The work was done precisely according to the plans given by God (Exodus 36:8-19). This teaches us that when we are entrusted with God’s work, we are to do it with the utmost care and attention to detail, reflecting the excellence of God Himself. God does not call us to mediocrity but to a standard that honors Him in all things.

4. Obedience to God’s Instructions

Throughout the process of building the Tabernacle, the Israelites follow the specific instructions God had given them. This emphasizes the importance of obeying God’s commands without deviation. Exodus 36 teaches us that God has a perfect plan for every aspect of our lives, and it is essential that we follow His instructions precisely. God’s way is always the best way, and obedience to His Word brings about His perfect will.

5. God’s Provision and Faithfulness

The Israelites’ generosity, combined with their willingness to contribute their skills and resources, resulted in the fulfillment of God’s plans for the Tabernacle. This shows that when we are obedient and faithful to what God calls us to do, He provides what is necessary for the work to be completed. The abundance of materials brought to Moses shows God’s provision for His purposes. It reminds us that God will equip us with everything we need when we trust Him and step out in faith.
