Genesis Chapter 29 Summary
Genesis Chapter 29 describes Jacob’s arrival in Haran, where he meets Rachel at a well and is immediately smitten by her beauty. Rachel is the daughter of Laban, Jacob’s uncle, and she is tending to her father’s sheep. Jacob offers to work for Laban for seven years in exchange for Rachel’s hand in marriage. Laban agrees, and Jacob works diligently, but when the time comes for the wedding, Laban deceives Jacob by giving him Leah, Rachel’s older sister, instead of Rachel. Jacob confronts Laban, who justifies his actions by citing the custom of marrying off the elder daughter first. Laban then allows Jacob to marry Rachel a week later, provided he works another seven years. The chapter highlights themes of love, deception, and family dynamics, as well as Jacob’s growing challenges in his new life.
