Dr. Matt Harmon Explores Biblical Interpretation
Dr. Matt Harmon, a Professor of New Testament Studies at Grace Theological Seminary, has published his latest work titled “How to Study the Bible’s Use of the Bible.” This book, co-authored with Dr. Gary Edward Schnittjer, examines how both the Old and New Testaments utilize Scripture. The authors particularly focus on how understanding the Old Testament can enhance comprehension of the New Testament.
A New Approach to Biblical Interpretation
“Many books on this topic discuss various scholarly perspectives on how biblical authors use Scripture,” Harmon explained. “Our goal was to go beyond that. We aimed to identify the hermeneutical choices that shape one’s interpretation. This allows readers to grasp the broader issues that influence how they understand the Bible’s use of Scripture.”
Harmon’s fascination with this subject dates back 20 years, starting with his dissertation on the Apostle Paul’s references to Isaiah in Galatians. Since then, much of his research has revolved around this theme.
“Studying how biblical authors cite or allude to earlier Scripture is crucial for understanding how the Bible fits together,” Harmon stated. “You don’t need to be a scholar to notice when a biblical author quotes or refers to another passage. Reflecting on these connections can be enlightening.”
A Proven Scholar
Dr. Harmon is a seasoned scholar with an impressive portfolio. He has authored 11 books and published 12 peer-reviewed articles, essays, and chapters, along with numerous book reviews and professional presentations. His previous works include commentaries on Galatians, Philippians, 2 Peter, and Jude, as well as “Asking the Right Questions” and a 12-week study of Jeremiah, both released by Crossway. His book “Rebels and Exiles” was also a finalist for the Biblical Foundations Book Awards.
Target Audience
The new book is designed for seminary students, pastors, and anyone interested in an in-depth exploration of how the Bible interprets itself. Dr. Harmon hopes that readers will find valuable insights that enrich their understanding of Scripture.
