In a notable press conference convened by the Association of Pakistani Christians in Italy, in collaboration with the Netherlands-based Jubilee Campaign, international voices gathered to urge the European Parliamentarians, particularly Italian lawmakers, to address the severe persecution faced by Christians in Pakistan. The focal points of concern included the misuse of blasphemy laws and the forced conversion of faith.
Central to the event was the launch of “Under Threat of Death: A Mother’s Faith in the Face of Injustice, Imprisonment, and Persecution,” a poignant account by Shagufta Kausar and Eugene Bach, published by Whitaker House. Kausar, speaking passionately, recounted her steadfast refusal to renounce Christianity despite facing a blasphemy accusation in Pakistan. “Christians in Pakistan are like sheep among wolves without a protector,” she poignantly expressed, reflecting on her eight-year ordeal in prison.
Lorenzo Malagola, a key organizer of the conference alongside Professor Shahid Mobeen, underscored the fundamental human rights principle of religious freedom, urging the Pakistani government to ensure that religious minorities can practice their beliefs without fear. He criticized the discriminatory policies of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) regarding religious identity cards, noting their restrictive nature which contrasts with freedom of religion and expression.
Fr. Gilbert Shahzad emphasized the urgent need for political engagement with Pakistan to abolish the death penalty and enact laws that safeguard minority rights. He highlighted Pakistan’s obligations to protect its citizens’ rights and freedoms, particularly those of religious minorities.
Joseph Jansen from Jubilee Campaign, Netherlands, detailed the ongoing persecution faced by Christians in Pakistan, including mob violence, attacks on churches and homes, forced conversions, and bonded labor. He urged Pakistani authorities to enforce laws that protect minorities and ensure justice, citing recent violent incidents as evidence of the worsening situation.
Tabassum Yousaf, an advocate, condemned the abuse of blasphemy laws to settle personal vendettas, contributing to a climate of fear and violence. She called for measures to combat violence against women and underscored the systemic issues perpetuating persecution.
Pastor Justin Bhatti highlighted international calls for Pakistan to amend or repeal blasphemy laws in compliance with human rights standards, emphasizing their misuse as a tool of intimidation.
Massimiliano Tubani, Director of ACN-Italy, stressed the importance of safeguarding religious minorities and promoting their socioeconomic development, calling for Pakistan to fulfill its international commitments to uphold human rights.
The speakers collectively called on Pakistan to address human rights violations, particularly the abolition of the death penalty under blasphemy laws and the protection of women’s rights. They urged adherence to international treaties and standards to ensure justice and security for all citizens, irrespective of their faith.
